It has a backbone of rugged volcanic peaks and massive crater lakes that run from Guatemala down to Costa Rica. The hot tropical climate and high rainfall of Central America gives rise to vast areas of dense rainforest particularly in Belize and Guatemala and on Nicaragua’s Mosquito Coast. The sierra Madre is the highland region of Guatemala and Elsalvador and is continuation of the sierra Madre of the North America. Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake in the world. The lake is dotted with three hundred and ten islands, the largest of which is ometepe. Tourism is a growing industry in Guatemala and each year about five million peoples visit the country Mayan ruins. Tikal once a great Mayan city was founded in about 600 BC and flourished until about AD eight hundred and ninety when it was suddenly deserted.
